✨ The Morning Preparations: Excitement in the Air
Every great wedding story begins with the quiet anticipation of the morning. The bride and her bridesmaids spent their morning getting ready nearby, sharing glasses of fizz and listening to music as hair and makeup came together.Capturing these fleeting, candid moments—the final zip of the dress, the emotional reaction of a father seeing his daughter for the first time, and the delicate details of the veil and bouquet—always sets the perfect tone for the wedding album.
👡💐✨ The Morning Pieces: Shoes, Blooms, and Bridal Details
Every great wedding story begins with the quiet anticipation of the morning. Before the bustle of hair and makeup takes over, I love spending time documenting the bride's curated possessions. These personal elements add a beautifully tactile, editorial layer to the opening pages of the wedding album.
⛪ Timeless Romance: A Beautiful Wedding at St Mary of the Angels, Cardiff
There is something truly magical about capturing a wedding in a venue steeped in history. As a wedding photographer, I am always inspired by spaces that add a layer of timeless elegance to a couple’s love story. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a gorgeous wedding at St Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic Church in the vibrant heart of Canton, Cardiff. This stunning, Grade II-listed historic church—with its magnificent Romanesque architecture and towering presence—provided the ultimate backdrop for a deeply romantic, traditional ceremony. Here is a glimpse into how this beautiful day unfolded.
Walking into St Mary of the Angels, you are immediately struck by its soaring arches, warm Pennant sandstone walls, and the soft, natural light filtering through the high clerestory windows. Designed by the celebrated architect Frederick Walters, the church feels grand yet incredibly intimate. For a documentary-style wedding photographer, this church is an absolute dream. The dramatic scale of the nave creates a breathtaking frame as the bride walks down the aisle. During the service, the soft pockets of directional light illuminated the couple perfectly as they exchanged their vows. Capturing those quiet, emotional glances against such a historic, reverent backdrop is what timeless wedding photography is all about. After the beautiful Nuptial Mass, the newlyweds made their way down the aisle as family and friends cheered.
📸 The Grand Exit & Portrait Moments
One of my favorite features of St Mary of the Angels is the grand arched entrance and the wide stone steps outside on Talbot Street. It is the perfect stage for a classic confetti tunnel! The joy on everyone’s faces as the couple emerged into the fresh Cardiff air was wonderful to capture.
🚗 The Romantic Escape: Capturing Magic in the Wedding Car
ollowing the grand confetti exit on the steps of St Mary’s, the newlyweds climbed into their vintage wedding car—and this brief window yielded some of the most beautiful, candid images of the entire day.For many couples, the journey from the church to the reception is the first time all day they actually get to sit down, breathe, and soak in the fact that they are finally married. Capturing that immediate, high-energy post-ceremony glow through the windows of a classic car is an absolute must-have for the wedding album.
Courtyards and High Street Charm: Inside The Bear Hotel Wedding Reception
Before heading inside to join the wedding party, we made a quick detour. Just a short walk from the front doors of The Bear Hotel lies one of the best-kept secrets in the Vale of Glamorgan: Cowbridge Physic Garden. Tucked safely away behind a massive, historic stone wall, this half-acre oasis offers a spectacular mix of symmetry, vibrant local flora, and deep heritage.Stopping here first gave the newlyweds a quiet, intimate space to relax in front of the camera for fifteen minutes without a crowd watching. The high stone walls—some parts of which date right back to medieval times—provided a gorgeous, rustic backdrop that contrasted beautifully with the softness of the wedding dress and the sharp lines of the suit. Walking down the stone-lined pathways, we used the central fountain, Palladian-style summer houses, and elegant arches to frame the couple naturally, capturing beautiful portraits before the newlyweds headed back to the hotel to celebrate.
🎺 The Grand Entrance: Welcoming the Newlyweds to The Bear Hotel
Following the portraits, the couple rejoined their guests in The Bear Hotel’s outdoor seating area, and the afternoon truly came alive. There is a brilliant, buzzing energy to this part of a wedding day. With the formalities of the church ceremony finished, everyone completely relaxed. The sun hit the paved courtyard beautifully as guests spilled out across the terrace, drinks in hand, mingling and soaking up the atmosphere.Documenting this outdoor reception was all about capturing the raw, unposed joy of the day:
The reception details 🍋
Stepping inside the reception suite at The Bear Hotel felt like stepping straight into a sun-drenched Italian villa. The couple chose a breathtaking lemon and powder blue colour palette, bringing a fresh, Mediterranean-inspired elegance to the historic Welsh inn.As a wedding photographer, I absolutely love capturing reception details. The styling of a room tells so much about the couple's personality, and this setup was an absolute visual feast. Here is how the beautiful Italian-inspired decor brought the room to life:
🎤 The Speeches: Laughter, Tears, and Timeless Moments
Once everyone was seated among the beautiful lemon and powder blue table settings, it was time for the speeches. The historic function room at The Bear Hotel, with its low timber beams and warm stone walls, creates an incredibly intimate atmosphere for this part of the evening. It feels cozy, relaxed, and close-knit, which always helps the speakers feel right at home.As a documentary wedding photographer, the speeches are easily one of my favorite parts of the day to shoot. With the formalities of the ceremony long finished, everyone is completely relaxed, making it the perfect window for capturing raw, unposed reactions.
Catching the Breather: Dusk, Drinks, and Good Company
Following the emotional high of the speeches, the formal timeline gave way to a completely relaxed evening. Before the music turned up, guests spilled back out onto the terrace and mingled throughout the historic rooms, enjoying drinks and catching up as the dusk light settled over Cowbridge High Street.Capturing these unposed, late-evening interactions is always a brilliant way to round out a gallery. It gave me the perfect final opportunity to document the casual hugs, shared drinks, and absolute contentment in the room before I packed up my cameras and headed home, leaving everyone to dance the rest of the night away.
